Registration Deadline 11/22/2019 Members and candidates with disabilities (whether physical or cognitive), who are considering applying for a certification exam must contact the Steamboat Springs office at least four weeks in advance of the scheduled test or exam to provide notice of their requested reasonable accommodation and to discuss their situations before the registration deadline date. Requests for accommodations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Please come prepared to ski each of the 3 days for this exam. 

If you are not affiliated with a Snowsports School or have not gone through a new hire training clinic at a Snowsports School prior to your attendance of the Alpine Level 1 Assessment, you MUST attend the Level 1 Assesment Prep prior to attending the Level 1 Assessment.

 

Prerequisites: PSIA/AASI membership, completion of the level 1 e-learning component.

The Level 1 Assessment is a trade certification validating a candidate’s ability to effectively work with beginning skiers (levels 1-4).  It consists of a prerequisite e-learning course that Is followed by 3 on-snow coaching and evaluation days.  Teaching, technical understanding/movement analysis and skiing demonstration skills are all attributes of successful Level 1 instructors.

Our professional staff will inspire you to work hard and learn more!  Coaching and guided practice are hallmarks of the level 1 exam.  Come prepared to enhance your skills as a teacher and as a skier and also to make new friends. Those candidates successfully completing the 3-day assessment and all requirements are awarded the PSIA Level 1 Certification.

You must attend all three days of the exam continuously.  If a candidate is unsuccessful in any portion of the exam, he/she will be invited to re-take those portions.  Contact the office directly to schedule a retake day.

Day 1: Movement Analysis/Technical

This on-snow session will focus on how to apply the skills concept by analyzing ski and body performance in beginner skiers.  Practice, observing other candidates and guests, describing cause and effect relationships and prescribing changes that will enhance skiing performance.   Receive feedback and coaching from your examiner to help you succeed.

Day 2: Skiing Demonstration

This on-snow session will focus on personal skiing skills and demonstrations specific to the beginner zone.  We will explore green, blue and maybe some easy black terrain.  Skiing skills will be tied to technical understanding and to teaching application.  Feedback and coaching will be provided to help candidates meet the Level 1 skiing standard.

Day 3: Teaching

Candidates will apply steps in the teaching cycle and make short presentations to the group.  You will be asked to track steps in the cycle and activities as others present.  Practice, observe and receive coaching from your examiner to become more effective with your beginner zone guests.

Helmet Policy: When attending PSIA-AASI events hosted at Vail Resorts (VR), all participants and clinic leaders will maintain the use of a helmet while sliding or riding.  Participants who do not abide by this policy will not be allowed to participate in the RM event until they can comply with the policy.  VR owned resorts within the Rocky Mountain Division are Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, and Crested Butte. For all other event locations, helmets are highly encouraged to best role model professionalism and safety within the industry.

Please know that you will be asked:

  • To sign a Release of Liability at the event check-in before participating in the event.
  • Bring your employee pass if you are employed by the host area. Lift tickets are generously donated by the host area for those not employed there.
  • Please be sure your equipment meets current safety and DIN specifications.

 Alpine Level 1 Candidates must complete the online e-learning module (LMS) at least 72 hours before attending the Level 1 Exam. If the LMS is not completed at least 72 hours before the start of the on-snow exam, participants will not be able to attend the event and will forfeit your payment.
